The City of Cranston provides curbside Refuse and Recycling collection to its residents in one, two, three and four-family dwellings. Pickup occurs once per week, and residents should have their refuse, recyclables and yard waste on the curb no later than 6:15 am on collection day, but not before noon the day before. Books, Waste Oil, TVs, Electronics, and scrap metal can be recycled by being brought to the Public Works Garage at 929 Phenix Avenue between the hours of 7:00 AM and 2:30 PM, Monday to Fridays. There is no charge or appointment needed to drop off the above items.
If your regularly scheduled trash collection day falls on or after a holiday, all pick-up days will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week.
Providence Water retail customers can request to have a FREE lead test kit mailed to their home or business to test their drinking water. For more information on how to receive a lead test kit by mail, or for additional information on how to get your water tested, please call our Water Quality Hotline at (401) 521-6303. Lead test kits can be requested during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm. Providence Water is offering 10-year 0% interest loans for homeowners to replace their private lead service lines. For more information, please call (401) 521-6303.
The Department of public works has a program that addresses rodent problems throughout the city. Any resident with a rodent problem within the exterior of his/her property should call the Rodent Control Officer at (401) 461- 1000, extension 3175. The property will be inspected for rat proofing and then baited if necessary.
For maintenance issues with the streetlights, repair service can be requested by calling the Public Works office at 780-3175. If possible, when reporting an outage, please provide the pole number of the streetlight of concern. The number is a tag installed by National Grid and is located at about eye level on the pole. This will assist the City in assigning work to repair crews.
A cost share program to assist property owners in replacing existing sidewalks in the city is available, it must be a residential home of 4 units or less, and it must have an existing sidewalk. This is a reimbursement program.
The Collection System Department of Veolia Water handles sewer emergencies 24 hours a day. Sewer connections, although fully owned by the property owner from the building to the sewer main in the street, are inspected and cleaned by Veolia Water from the property line to the street. The property owner is responsible for ownership and maintenance of the portion from the cleanout at the property line to the house. During regular working hours (Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM) you may contact Veolia Water at 467-7210 ext. 101. Evening, weekend, and holiday calls may be made to 942-2121 for recorded instructions. Please be advised the cleanout at the property line (which is owned by the property owner) must be accessible and operable for Veolia Water to access and maintain the city side of the service lateral. If the problem is determined to be a blockage in the service lateral from the cleanout back into the property structure, it is the responsibility of the property owner to retain the services of an independent contractor to clear or repair the blockage.

Trees within public rights-of-way are maintained by the City as specified in City Code. Contact the City Tree Warden at 401-780-6171 for any concerns about city trees.
Yard Waste is picked up separately on your regular trash day between April 6th, and December 18th. Yard Waste must be placed in brown paper bags (no plastic bags) or corrugated boxes marked “Yard Waste” or barrels marked “Yard Waste.” Branches must be bundled and no longer than 4-feet long and placed on the curb no later than 6:15 am on your collection day, but not before noon the day before.

This program provides low-interest loans to income eligible Cranston homeowners to assist them in making needed repairs and improvements to their homes and to correct code violations. Program is available for single family to three family buildings and property must be owner occupied. Typical improvements include roofs, vinyl siding, replacement windows, doors, and gutters. Depending on an applicant’s household income, this loan program includes a 0% deferred or a 2% interest loan with a 15-year amortization. Funds cannot be used for new construction.
The Department of Community Development offers two programs for first time income eligible homebuyers purchasing a home in the City of Cranston. The assistance given at time of closing becomes a grant after homeowner has resided in the property for five years.
This program is available to first time income eligible home buyers to help defray some of the fees incurred at closing. This five-year grant will provide up to $3,000 toward closing costs.
The Down payment assistance program provides 50% of the required down payment, not to exceed $5,000. This matching fund program is available to first time income eligible homeowners but cannot be combined with the Closing Cost Assistance Program. CCAP EMERGENCY HOUSING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM – Assists individuals/families living in Cranston with back rent, security deposits, mortgage assistance, late fees associated with back rent or mortgage, moving costs and utilities.
